![]() OK so we are a week ahead of Joe Duffy @ RTE.IE for our Pre-Christmas gift to the community of Newbridge - but how about treating yourself to a beginers gentle Hatha Yoga class on Friday 29th of November 2013 @ The Lifeflow centre, Newbridge for €5 - yes really - that's €5 for a 90 minute slice of heaven? Places are limited to 12 lucky yogis and the class starts at 7.30pm - 9.00pm - so you can still make it home in time for the Late Late Toy show. Call Susan on 087 697 2679, you'll be glad you called! ![]() Did you ever wonder what meditation was all about or what does Mindfulness mean any way? Meditation is simply learning to focus our mind - on one point. This can be achieved in many ways; some people use a mantra, a repetitive sacred sanskrit phrase to focus their mind. In our Catholic tradition this is similar to the Rosary or the Divine Chaplet, or some people use a nice relaxing picture to focus on or a mandela picture in the Buddhist tradition. It doesn't matter how we quieten the mind as long as we learn some tools to relieve the never ending chatter of the restless mind to restore equilibrium and balance in our body mind system. So this is why Yoga is the perfect tool to find that peace and stillness within. Whilst practising yoga we are giving our bodies a chance to be busy, which also give the mind something to focus on. When we harness our breath and connect it to our Asana posture we have the perfect recipe to focus our minds on the present moment (Mindfulness) and so bring relief from the stress and anxiety we experience in the day to day busy'ness of living. 'Yoga as a Mindful Meditation' workshop is on tonight at 8.00pm - 9.30pm at the Lifeflow Centre, Moorefield Road, Newbridge. Phone Susan on 087 697 2679 to book. I'm always interested in keeping my teaching skills fresh and there is no better way to do this than to attend workshops and seminars presented by my peers. I attended Anne-Marie McGlinchy's yoga seminar, which was hosted by Yoga Therepy Ireland, on Saturday the 2nd of November 2013 at the Marino Institute in Griffith Avenue Dublin. What a treat it was - as Anne-Maries workshops always are.
She has an impressive 40 years of teaching as a yoga teacher under her belt and she embodies the best of what yoga is about. Her workshop proved that sometimes less is more and my shoulders, biceps and triceps really felt like they had been worked out the day after the workshop, despite the deceptively simple yet exact nature of the movements we did at the workshop. We also looked at how to connect into the energy of our body's chakra system with a particular focus on the 3rd Solar Plexus chakra (seat of self power) and the 4th Heart chakra (seat of unconditional love of self and others). The meditation and focus on these chakras during our yoga practise brought about a wonderful release of trapped energy or tension in the body with the end result I was feeling very uplifted, open and re-juvenated at the end of the day. Anne-Marie has a lovely yoga retreat centre in Buncrana Donegal. Check out the link here http://www.dunreeyogacentre.com/ |
