In our modern lifestyle we have more equipment to stay in touch, to wash our dishes, to wash our clothes, and to record our programmes than ever before; I have yet to come across a gadget that will iron my laundry by itself -but believe me if there is one - I'll be the first to buy it.
One would think with all this time on our hands we would have more space for rest and recreation but sadly this is not the case. Why is it that with all these 'handy helpers' we are more stressed out that ever before and have less quality time on our hands to really make the most of our time and the people around us?
When a friend of mine - who knows my bananas schedule in intricate detail - asked me where did I find the time to organise a surprise birthday party for another friend of mine in the middle of all the other `stuff' I was busy doing- I had a lightbulb moment: Because I thrive on being 'busy'. Simple. Because isn't that what we're supposed to do? Isn't that what's called 'multi-tasking?' Aren't women notoriously good (or rather bad) at this? Why do we put ourselves under so much pressure to be everything to everyone?
Do you know what I did early the other morning in sheer desperation for a moments peace? I sat on top of the cats kennel and breathed in the fresh morning air very deeply whilst listening to the birds singing and meditated for 10 minutes - and you know what? It was sheer bliss. The kids thought I was out at the clothes line - hanging out the laundry and they didn't even notice I was gone. Beats trying to lock myself in the bathroom for Kapalabhati - they have figured out how to unlock the door from the outside. All you need is 10 minutes!!
